Is Forms Authentication required?

I would like to use this solution (or something similar) to allow our AD users to change their own password. I have a default MOSS setup using standard AD authentication i.e. no forms authentication anywhere. I have installed the solution by compiling the latest source code but when I debug the change password page, in the method that it uses to check the membership provider type (DetermineProviderType()), it is always coming back as the SQL membership provider, and not AD. I am guessing this is because no membership provider is set by default in a standard MOSS web.config so it is therefore using the value from the machine.config (this is a guess)? This leads me to wonder if this solution has been designed so that it assumes you are always specifying a membership provider as you would if you were configuring forms authentication?
